Municipal dump, Oaxaca, Mexico 1998 - A woman braces herself amidst the wind and smoke of the dump as a garbage truck expels new waste. She is hoping to be first to pick though the garbage to scavenge materials she can sell for recycling. ..In the municipal dump a self governed group of 80 individuals and families eke out a living. Los Pepenadors (the Pickers) work in a landscape of garbage and flames, blanketed by toxic smoke, along side bulldozers and garbage trucks. They do the impossible job of recycling what the rest of their society can't be bothered to deal with. ...
